Yawkey Family Inn - CHB family housing

Dr Millis said typical hospitalization is 6 days for PAO. we planned to stay in BOS for an additional week or so after discharge for recovery.  CHB website has a lot of links for nearby accommodations.  i wanted to find something with an elevator, comfortable bed and walk-in shower.  i looked into corporate housing which all require a 1-mo minimum.  the longwood best western next door to the hospital has CHB rates starting at around $149 for a queen, and $189 for a king "suite" with fridge/microwave.  i visited the hotel beforehand to check if it was acceptable and the rooms are basic comfort and have free wi-fi. the hotel is in the same building as a food court (mcd's, subway, DQ!, etc). there is also a full-service restaurant in the hotel.

i had come across Yawkey Family Inn YFI on the CHB website before but we thought it would be run down with locker-room type communal showers and bathroom stalls. YFI is less than 1/2 mile from CHB and we decided to check it out after my pre-op appt.  the house is delightful!  it's a former northeastern univ fraternity that was renovated and opened in jul '09.  the home is only for CHB patient families that live more than 50miles from BOS.  there are 20+ guest rooms with flat-screen tv, tempur-pedic beds and a pull-out sleeper. all linens and towels are provided.  two rooms have private bath.  the shared bathrooms are bathroom "suites", with private shower, sink and toilet.  there are handicap accessible baths too.  room rates range from $30-60 per night.

YFI kitchen is fully-equipped with pots/pans etc and each room has a labeled cubby or bin for the refrigerator, freezer and dry storage cabinet.  there are communal food items that are donated or left behind.  there is free laundry and communal detergent.  trader joe's and shaw's are both about .5mi away. there are house rules, like clean up after yourself and all guests were very mindful of this which made the house very comfortable.  the house has free wi-fi, dvd library, 2 computer stations with printer, playroom, elevator, and wheelchair ramp. overnight parking is not allowed in the lot. there is a calendar of events which includes lots of meals hosted by local organizations (thursday is pizza night!). there is secure card access to the house and someone is on staff during business hours.  we booked a room right when we visited the house.

the hospital room has a pull-out sleeper for one person with linens. the yellow patient family badge gives that person access to the fitcorp gym across the street.
